Anthony Mackie reveals if he could lead The Avengers as Captain America after taking over from Chris Evans: ‘He’s just a normal guy who hangs out with a bunch of weirdos’

Anthony Mackie discussed the possibility of Sam Wilson becoming the new leader of The Avengers during an interview with Empire magazine.

The 44-year-old actor opened up about how his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also known as The Falcon and the new Captain America, could fit in with the other members of the group.

The actor, who has been endorsed by his former co-star Chris Evans, has played Wilson for nearly a decade.

During the interview, Mackie expressed via ScreenRant that while Wilson wasn’t necessarily as extraordinary as the other Avengers, he was more than qualified to serve on the team.

‘Sam is the only character without superpowers. He’s just a normal guy hanging out with a bunch of weirdos,” he said.

The Detroit star also commented that his own upbringing would not have prepared him well for a leadership position in the superhero group.

‘Being from New Orleans, I’ve been in a few fights. And heart and charisma never helped me in a fight. That usually just hit me. That could cause a problem when you fight someone like Thanos,” he said.

Mackie first played Wilson in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was released in 2014.

The actor reprized his role in several films set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the next few years.

His character was finally named as the new Captain America at the end of Avengers: Endgame.

The actor starred in the miniseries The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which premiered on Disney+ in 2021.

He is set to lead the cast of Captain America: New World Order, which will be released in 2024.

Mackie talked about taking on the role of the superhero during an interview with men’s diarywhere he commented on the difference between Wilson and the original Captain America.

Mine will be different. What you have to realize about Sam: he’s a superhero who’s not really a superhero. There is no secret serum. There is no this or that. I only have wings on my suit that I got from the army,” he said.

The artist also stated that he saw Wilson’s lack of superpowers as a source of strength.

‘Everything I do, I do as a common man. When you see me, you might think, “Oh, I can be a superhero too.” Whereas if you look at the Hulk or any of those guys, you can’t compete,” he said.
