Teenager’s ingenious night out hack backfires

Two friends’ late-night stunt backfired when they hid their coats behind a bar bathroom wall, only to discover they were missing later.

Maisy Armstrong, 19, and her friend Harriet Baillie, 20, were delighted with her innovative strategy to avoid wearing bulky winter jackets all night, but were then taken aback when they disappeared.

The couple filmed their exciting hidden corner in a viral TikTok, which racked up over 2.5 million views, during an outing at Bar Twenty One in Ipswich, Suffolk, last month.

In the clip, Maisy can be seen smiling as she places a faux fur coat with a loose wall panel inside a broken toilet around midnight.

However, two hours later, 20-year-old Harriet checks in her return to discover the coats, only to realize the panel has been moved and they have been “stolen”.

“It definitely didn’t go as planned,” said Maisy, a trainee sailor. “There was no cloakroom, so we wore our coats and they didn’t bother us anymore. She had a big fur jacket.

“When we went to the bathroom, one said it was out of order, but we noticed the wall was loose and we saw a gap, so we thought that was a really smart idea.”

The teen explained that they didn’t think anyone would get into the cubicle, “but obviously they did.”

“Someone must have walked in and thought ‘I want those coats’ and taken them away,” he added.

Maisy praised the “really helpful” bartender if someone had delivered a coat, admitting that she “panicked a bit”.

The relieved reveler says she found the coats, which cost around £30 each, hanging over a booth, and the couple rushed to grab them before telling staff and leaving the venue.

The 19-year-old admits she thought she was ‘being smart’ by using the wall space, but says she’ll either take their coats or pay to keep them in a cloakroom in future.

“When you think you’re an absolute genius for putting your coats behind the bathroom wall until you come back at the end of the night and they’re gone,” she wrote in a caption capturing the experience on a TikTok.

Commenters seemed taken aback by Maisy and Harriet’s stunt.

‘How the hell?’ questioned a bewildered user. Unless they saw you put them there and came back after you left.

‘Why would it be a good idea to put your coat in there?’ asked another.

“Yeah, the wall probably fell off and they saw it,” suggested a third. He doesn’t seem confident at all.

However, not everyone was so critical, as others shared their own unique hideouts.

“My friends used to do this at the bottom of the bin and they got their jackets stolen too lol,” one admitted.

A second person wrote: “I put mine behind the vending machine at the concert and it disappeared too.”

“We used to hide things in the dryer at parties in the past,” a third admitted.

A Bar Twenty One spokesperson said: “We are very pleased that our staff were able to help locate Maisy’s coat.”

“We also thought it was a great idea and really very inventive. Would you like a job?

“However, we do not encourage our customers to do this. We have taken this very lightly with a smile. Many thanks to Maisy for supporting our little gem of a bar.’
