A boy fights for his life in the hospital after he is hit by a 4×4 while sitting on the handlebars of his friend’s bike on the Central Coast.

Emergency crews were called to the intersection of Sydney Ave and Ocean Beach Rd, Umina Beach, following reports that a 4WD and a bicycle collided around 7pm on Friday.

A 12-year-old boy, who was being carried on the handlebars, suffered multiple injuries and was airlifted to Sydney Children’s Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The cyclist, an 11-year-old boy, suffered leg injuries and is in stable condition at Gosford Hospital.

Police confirmed that none of the children were wearing helmets at the time of the accident.

The driver of the 4WD, a 59-year-old woman, was not injured and was taken to Gosford Hospital for a mandatory test.

Officers attached to the Brisbane Water Police District established a crime scene and began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
