A puppy was rushed to the vet showing signs of ovulation, after she licked HRT cream off her owner’s arm.
Worried that her dachshund Lilly might be having an allergic reaction, Kirsty Mattinson took her to check out Paragon Veterinary Referrals in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.
The vets examined the pet and were surprised to notice the ovulation symptoms given that she was only 12 weeks old.
However, tests later revealed that Lilly had absorbed estrogen from a Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) cream that Ms. Mattison had rubbed on her arm.
This had caused her to develop symptoms of being in season.

Lilly has since made a full recovery and Kirsty, in her 50s, now wears long sleeves after applying the cream.
He also urges pet owners to be aware of the dangers HRT creams pose to animals, as they can cause fatal bone marrow toxicity in dogs.
“Lilly seemed to be getting more swollen every day and we thought it might have been an allergy,” Ms Mattison said.
“We were very worried, but the Paragon team was excellent and kept us constantly updated.
“I’ve learned an important lesson and my advice to dog owners is to keep them away from hormone products that they may use on their bodies.”

Lara Baptista, a small animal internal medicine clinic in Paragon, said: “Lilly is lucky because her owners realized something was wrong and took action.”
‘By identifying the cause of the problem, Lilly was no longer exposed to the hormone cream.
‘Once contact with the cream is stopped, the signs should go away on their own.
“We would echo Kirsty’s advice that dog owners using estrogen-containing hormone (TRH) cream should not allow their pets to come in contact with the area where the cream is applied, as the consequences can be very upsetting. “.
