Former Aston Villa star Gabby Agbonlahor has hit back at Jurgen Klopp after the Liverpool boss slammed the winger’s attack on Manchester United.

Agbonlahor tweeted a picture of himself wheeling away in celebration after scoring in Aston Villa’s 0-1 win at Anfield in 2014 with the caption: ‘Flashback Friday – mentality to win 1-0 at Anfield.’

The saga started after United’s 4-0 loss to Brentford when the 35-year-old  told talkSPORT: ‘This is not Manchester United. If I was them now after this game I’d be thinking, “You know what, ten Hag, just pack up”. He’s had pre-season and they have started the season as a shambles, they’re like strangers on the pitch.

‘They’re just not good enough. It’s a shambles kit, shambles club at the moment. I’ve been hammering United and people are saying I’ve got an agenda against Manchester United – no, I’m speaking facts that real Manchester United fans will agree with. ‘

Despite his club’s bitter rivalry with the Red Devils, Klopp leapt to their defence in a recent press conference, saying:  ‘Gabby Agbonlahor – he lost against us 6-0 in my first year and I couldn’t remember him as a mentality monster on the pitch but what he said about United on that show…I was close to calling in and telling him you forgot completely you have been a player.

‘It was unbelievable (what he was saying) and if ex players are already going like this you can imagine where everything else is going.’

Agnonahor’s dig about scoring at Anfield, albeit in a game that predated Klopp’s arrival at Liverpool, appears to be the latest salvo in their spat.’

Back on the pitch, Monday’s clash is a vital opportunity for Liverpool to get their season up and running.

They are currently winless after two games and are without an obvious striker for the game after injuries to Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino and a three-match ban for Darwin Nunez.
