New Zealand has been rocked by a ‘massive’ magnitude 6.1 earthquake that was felt by 40,000 Kiwis on the north and south islands.
The “terrifying” tremor centered around its north island capital Wellington on Wednesday at 7:38pm NZDT about 50km northwest of Paraparaumu at a depth of 76km.
GeoNet classified the quake as strong after it hit with a jolt and was followed by 30 seconds of moderate shaking.

A Christchurch resident told the New Zealand Herald the quake had more of a rocking sensation.
Newstalk ZB chief political reporter Aaron Dahmen said his entire home in Wellington shook aggressively after feeling a “big hit”.
“There was a constant rumbling going on for some time,” he said.
