Young woman declares recycling in Australia ‘a scam’ after seeing what her local garbos did to the red and yellow bins

A young woman has called recycling in Australia “a scam” after taking a video of local rubbish collectors “mishandling” waste.

Video shows Cumberland Council garbage collectors in western Sydney placing both recycling and general waste in the back of the same garbage truck on February 10.

Video posted to TikTok by Krish Waje labels the council’s handling of recycling “appalling.”

A video of Cumberland Council scavengers in Sydney mixing recycling with general waste has caused one woman to decide that recycling is a scam.

Ms Waje says this is not the first time she has caught scavengers mixing waste.

“I’ve seen them do it before, it’s the first time I’ve seen them do it on camera,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

He then says that since his video was uploaded, he understands that Australia’s recycling infrastructure has recently declined since it stopped shipping waste abroad.

“What really makes me angry with all of this is that the council is still acting,” he continued.

‘[The council] they still make us think that we are recycling, separating all our recycling so that it goes into the same container.’

In the clip, the garbage collectors are unfazed as they place cardboard and other recycled materials on top of general waste, such as filled garbage bags.

Cumberland Council states on its website that voters should not use recycling bins for plastic bags, food waste or garbage.

“When the wrong items are placed in your yellow-lidded recycling bin, recycling collection and recovery is contaminated,” their website state.

“This means that large loads of contaminated recycling bins can be sent to landfill, wasting your recycling efforts.”

The council's website states that constituents should not mix general rubbish and recycled rubbish as it 'contaminates' the recycling and then has to be put in a landfill.

“They are literally putting the red bin and the yellow bin in the same fucking collection bin,” Ms Waje said in the video.

‘What’s the point of us separating the containers… when everything goes in the same container?

“We believe that we are recycling, we are consciously recycling. But it is not recycling.

TikTok users were divided on the young woman’s post.

‘The town hall can also fine us for not separating our waste. Just so they can do this lol,” wrote one user.

‘Example of disconnection with top-down policies. Virtue signal policies, like banning plastic straws, without any real infrastructure so people just pretend,” another commented on the local government.

“It’s not a scam, it’s just people not doing their job properly,” wrote one user, defending the council.

Another user commented on the recycling industry: ‘We don’t have the infrastructure to recycle everything.’

‘A lot of plastic/glass is stored in warehouses and eventually goes to landfill.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Cumberland Council for comment.
