Patrick Mahomes’ touching post-game hug with his father, Pat, is caught on video

NFL Films captured the touching exchange between Patrick Mahomes and his father following the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s MVP performance in Super Bowl LVII.

“I’ve never seen anything like you,” Pat Mahomes, 52, told his son during a 15-second hug at the end of Kansas City’s 38-35 win Sunday. You are different. You different. I love you. I love you to death, honey. You know I do. Damn, you’re good.

The exchange ended with Mahomes and his father slapping five and simultaneously exclaiming, ‘Yeah!’

Patrick, 27, aggravated his high ankle sprain late in the second quarter and was seen limping into the locker room, only to come back and deliver one of the two most memorable quarters in Super Bowl history. Patrick completed 13 of 14 passes in the second half for 93 yards and two touchdowns. Plus, his limping 26-yard run on the Chiefs’ final drive set up Harrison Butker’s game-winning field goal.

Surprisingly, Mahomes’ sprained ankle didn’t stop him from delivering an impassioned halftime speech in the Chiefs’ locker room on Sunday in Glendale, Arizona. The NFL and Super Bowl MVP refrained from treating his ankle, instead deciding to address the Chiefs, who entered halftime trailing by 10 points.

“We just dared ourselves, man, to put everything out there, and I don’t want to say we played tight in the first half, but you didn’t see the same joy that we played with,” Mahomes said Monday. “And he wanted the guys to know that everything we’re working for is for this moment.”

Mahomes sprained a high ankle four weeks earlier against Jacksonville before it was aggravated by a hit in the second quarter by Eagles linebacker TJ Edwards.

“We put a new tape on there and did some movement to give him some mobility,” said Mahomes, who told reporters he did not receive a pain shot Sunday in Arizona. “It was something he was going to play with.”

On Monday, head coach Andy Reid attributed Patrick’s resilience to his childhood, much of which was spent backstage in MLB. In fact, Patrick is portrayed as a child during his father’s stints with the Minnesota Twins and New York Mets.

“He grew up in a locker room,” Reid said. She has seen the greats and strives to be the best. Without saying anything, that’s how he works. He wants to be the best player of all time. That’s what he wants to do, and that’s the way he goes about his business.

“When it’s time for the guys around him to step up their game, he helps them with that,” Reid continued. “Great quarterbacks make everyone around them better, including the head coach, so he’s done a great job.”

A Twins fan account shared an old photo of Pat and young Patrick on Twitter when the latter was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Pat Mahomes pitched for 11 MLB seasons and also played in Japan before retiring in 2003.

Used primarily as a reliever, Mahomes made three relief appearances for the Mets during the 1999 postseason and pitched four scoreless innings in relief of starter Al Leiter in a Game 6 of the NLCS against the Atlanta Braves.

He and Patrick’s mother, Randi Martin, have two children together, but are now divorced. The youngest, Jackson, is a social media celebrity.

Godfather, whose godfather is retired MLB star LaTroy Hawkins, Patrick was also a star pitcher at Texas Tech and was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 37th round of the 2014 MLB Draft.
