A brave Mexican rescue dog died while searching for survivors of the earthquake in Turkey among the rubble.

Proteus had been sent to Turkey as part of a large international mission to save lives following the devastating earthquake that has so far claimed more than 35,000 lives.

The Secretariat of National Defense of Mexico said in a statement on Sunday, February 12: ‘Thank you Proteo for your heroic work, you fulfilled the mission of the Mexican Army.’

He continued: ‘Members of the Mexican Army and Air Force deeply regret the loss of our great companion, the dog ‘Proteo’, you fulfilled your mission as a member of the Mexican Delegation in the search and rescue of our brothers in Turkey. We are proud of you.’

It is still unclear how Proteus died, but there are reports that he had carried out crucial work searching for survivors in disaster zones.

The brave dog, named Proteo, from Mexico, died searching for survivors in the rubble after traveling to Turkey and taking part in rescue efforts, according to local media.

One of the soldiers who took part in the rescue operations in Turkey reportedly said: “I want to tell you that I am proud of you, because you have always been a strong dog, a hard-working dog who never gave up.”

Proteo was one of ten dogs sent from Mexico to Turkey to help rescue earthquake survivors.

An image was posted on social media purporting to show Proteus lying in the trunk of a car with what looks like an IV in his front paw, saying, “He has completed the mission.”

So far, the Mexican Defense Ministry had not released any further details about how the dog died, with Mexican media reporting that it was while searching the rubble for survivors.

Emergency workers are racing against the clock to save people from the rubble, and the international community is sending numerous experts to help.

At least 35,000 people have been killed in the earthquakes that devastated large areas of Turkey and Syria last week.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck southern Turkey early Monday morning, devastating the south of the country and northern Syria.

A second magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck the same region again at 11:24 a.m. local time Monday, causing even more damage.
