Australia’s rental crisis has been summed up in an extraordinary video of hopeful tents lining up down the road desperate to inspect a single property.
The video was shot in Bentley, an eastern suburb of Perth, where a massive queue of around 100 temporary tenants stretched along Davies Lane waiting to inspect a two-bedroom, two-bathroom property with a car space for rent. .
Posted on the Jackajaya TikTok account, the video sparked a debate among viewers about the national rental crisis.

The video comes after data from the WA Real Estate Institute revealed that Perth’s rental vacancy rate fell to its lowest level since records began in December, at just 0.6 per cent.
A balanced rental market is considered to have a vacancy rate of around 2.5 per cent, but the Perth market has not been at these levels since 2019.
The video prompted a response from many viewers to join in the debate on the rental crisis.
“Richest mining state and we can’t provide housing,” wrote one user.
‘I understand the lineup. I pray every day for us who are watching, standing in the heat waiting patiently,” wrote another.
Potential renters also shared their own horror stories.
“Shocking, I’ve been applying for 18 months,” one wrote.
Some users took aim at governments for not providing enough help with WA Premier among those in the line of fire.

The highly sought after property advertises a ‘4light and bright with open plan kitchen, sitting room, reverse cycle air conditioning and plenty of storage space’.
The Davies Lane property is currently listed for $400 per week and is no longer taking inspections while they review applications.
The rental market is expected to shrink further as more international students are required to return to Australian shores to complete face-to-face studies at universities.
