An Arizona mother is fighting for her life after a truck intentionally ran over her and her partner while out walking in the morning.
Lisa Lenahan, a former caretaker, remains in a medically induced coma with a brain hemorrhage following the terror attack. Her partner, Kirt Heaward, a retired veteran, was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon after breaking four ribs.
Refugio Barraza Torres faces two counts of aggravated assault following the incident on Monday, February 6, after he allegedly told police that he rammed the couple because “the devil told me to kill three people.”
A neighbor chillingly claimed that he believed Torres may have been harassing the couple, who are in their sixties, before the attack, although they reportedly did not know the driver.
Lisa Lenahan remains in a medically induced coma with a brain hemorrhage following the terror attack, while her husband Kirt Heaward was released from hospital Wednesday afternoon after breaking four ribs.
According to a GoFundMe page set up for the couple, Heaward is a retired Army veteran, while Lenehan is a former caregiver.
Shocking footage of the incident shows Torres slowly turning into the street as the couple took a leisurely morning walk, after reportedly following them for several minutes.
The driver then accelerates rapidly, colliding with Lenahan, leaving her in critical condition.
Moments later, he returns and drives straight into Heaward, causing him to crash into a brick wall.
Haunting surveillance video from the aftermath shows Heaward’s leg in the rubble of the destroyed wall, as stunned witnesses frantically call 911.
After attempting to flee the scene, Torres’ right front tire was blown off, leaving a trail of tracks on the road that allowed Phoenix police to locate him.
They located Torres at a nearby house, where they saw him standing next to the truck with a missing tire.
According to court records, Torres told police that ‘the devil’ told him to kill three people. After officers asked him if he had done it, he replied: ‘I think so.’
Local reports indicated that Torres’s wife informed police that he was acting strangely in the week leading up to the attack, telling police that he was having “problems with his brain.”
Family members also claimed he was randomly taking medication, police said.
“It’s a really horrible tragedy,” said the couple’s attorney, Chris Goodnow, who said the injured couple have been together for several years.
“When you look at the images, it’s basically a bit of a miracle that they’re alive right now.”
They have been separated. Kirt is dealing with his own injuries but thinking a lot about Lisa.
Shocking footage of the attack shows the driver initially slowly coming to a stop near the couple.
Torres is then seen chillingly speeding towards the couple in their sixties.
Lisa is then hit by the truck, while her husband in despair gets out of the way.
Torres is seen returning to the scene and driving towards Howard, who was left with broken ribs after the attack.
A neighbor added that they believed Torres may have been harassing the couple before the vehicular assault.
Linda Gourley, who lives near the scene, said ABC15: ‘Knowing that someone was walking down the street, and I felt that he was almost stalking me.
It was so slow. It wasn’t normal.
“It was bad enough to see him take the first blow, but to know that he turned around and came back, it was like ‘What the hell is going on?’
According to a GoFundMe page set up for the couple, which has since raised more than $6,700, Heward is a retired Army veteran, while Lenehan is a former caregiver.
The couple have four children and six grandchildren between them.
“This devastating incident will never be undone and will prevent them from doing everything they love in retirement for the foreseeable future,” the fundraiser stated.
