Guests at a Melbourne rock and roll bar were in for a treat on Wednesday night when Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith gave an impromptu performance.

Just 17 people crowded around the stage of the famous Cherry Bar to enjoy an intimate experience with the 61-year-old rocker.

Smith took the stage without any entourage during an open mic night and began drumming alongside some of Melbourne’s up-and-coming local bands.

Guests at a Melbourne dive bar were treated to quite the treat on Wednesday night when Red Hot Chilli Peppers drummer Chad Smith gave an impromptu performance.

Cherry Bar owner James Young said the iconic drummer “rolled up his sleeves, crouched down and got dirty.”

He performed AC/DC’s If You Want Blood and Up To My Neck.

Smith joins a long list of prolific artists who have also performed at the venue, including Axl Rose, Lady Gaga and the Arctic Monkeys.

Earlier that day, Smith had spent the day visiting a Drumtek music store in Melbourne.

The night before, the Red Hot Chili Peppers played a sold-out concert at Marvel Stadium.

After the concert, several commuters at the nearby Southern Cross railway station began their own impromptu karaoke concert.

The band’s hits Other Side and Under the Bridge were cheered by the crowd as they drove home from the concert.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers will perform their second Melbourne concert at Marvel Stadium on Thursday night after their supporting act Post Malone has taken the stage.

Their last concert in Australia during this trip will take place in Perth on Sunday.
