The assistance will be administered through the Red Cross and humanitarian agencies.
The death toll from Monday’s quake has risen to more than 3,500 and the number of Australians affected is unknown.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese conveyed Australia’s condolences and said the nation was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and devastation taking place.
“All the world’s thoughts and condolences to the people of this region who are suffering right now,” he said.
New Zealand will also contribute $1.5 million.
