Nick Sirianni admits he has a chip on his shoulder after being snubbed by Andy Reid in Kansas City as the two coaches prepare to take on their former teams and each other in Super Bowl LVII

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has admitted to having a chip on his shoulder after he was fired when Andy Reid took over the Kansas City Chiefs after the 2012 season.

Sirianni’s first NFL coaching job was with the Chiefs, where he started as QA in 2009. He eventually worked his way up to being named wide receivers coach by then-head coach Romeo Crennel.

When Reid was hired by the Chiefs, Reid brought trusted assistant David Culley with him from the Eagles to fill the WR coaching job.

‘Do you always have this little chip on your shoulder? Sure, yes, you do,’ Sirianni said.

“But that’s who I am as a coach and as a person: I want to make sure I’m working hard to be the best I can be.” And sure, you hold on to some of those things.

Andy came in because we weren’t good enough in Kansas City. And he stepped in and did an amazing job,’ Sirianni said.

“What I appreciated is that he brought everyone in and talked to them.

“I didn’t train with Andy, but he gave me a good example of what to do with a difficult part of the job of, ‘Hey, I’ve got a guy here.’ He was complimentary.

He knew I would be down so he gave me strength when I was down. I appreciated it, and it seems like that’s what he is like as a person and as a coach.”

Sirianni would land a job as a controls coach with the San Diego Chargers in 2013, where he spent several years as a staffer for Frank Reich.

Reich would eventually hire Sirianni as his offensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts when he was named head coach there in 2018, leading Sirianni to land the Eagles’ head coaching job in 2021.

But Sirianni is still grateful for the path his career took after Reid let him go.

As time goes by and you mature and you think about it, “Hey, I needed to go through that, I needed to be in this situation.” In a sense, you thank God for the things you’ve been through because that makes you who you are today.’
