Australian Idol: Judge Meghan Trainor regrets sending 18-year-old singer home

Dramatic moment Australian Idol judge Meghan Trainor chases an 18-year-old singer she sent home after realizing she made the wrong choice.

A teenage singer was given a second chance on Monday’s episode of Australian Idol after judge Meghan Trainor made a “terrible mistake” in sending him home.

Jakob Poyner, 18, from Narooma, wowed the judges as he strummed the guitar and sang The Dead South’s Broken Cowboy in an “interesting” deep voice.

Unlike the other musicians who auditioned in Sydney, Jakob told the judges that he needed his sheet music because he has a “poor memory” and “has a hard time learning”.

“I have my folders with me because my memory isn’t the best,” he told Kyle Sandilands, before adding that “fingers crossed” he doesn’t need them.

When asked for more details about his poor memory, Jakob said that, for example, if his mother asked him to buy milk at the supermarket, he would forget.

But despite this problem, music is his ‘everything’.

“At school I always lost concentration and couldn’t concentrate properly, a bit slower than others,” he added. ‘[In] everyday life situations that I always struggle with.’

After her performance, all four judges – Kyle, Meghan, Amy Shark and Harry Connick Jr – were stunned by her unique style, but worried about her memory.

Amy said she was worried that if he made it to live shows it would be like throwing him into the ‘den of lions’.

Judge Meghan Trainor initially gave the teen a 'no', but later regretted her decision.

She added: “The memory thing… you’re in front of so many people, you have a whole song to remember… It’s kind of stressful.”

Despite his fears, he finally gave it a ‘yes’, but Harry decided not to give the teenager a chance, saying he would need more time to memorize music.

Of the four judges, Kyle was the most enthusiastic about Jakob, saying he “didn’t care” if Jakob had to “cover himself with sticky notes” to remember his songs.

‘That was unexpected. There’s something interesting about you that I didn’t expect,” added the radio host, before saying “yes.”

This left Jakob’s fate in Meghan’s hands.

While the All About That Bass star said her deep voice was “so pretty,” she gave it a “no” because she was too young.

However, once the singer left the room, Meghan regretted her decision and Harry told her that if she was “slightly on the fence” she should give it another chance.

In a dramatic change of heart, Meghan ran down the aisle to tell Jakob that she had changed her mind.

When he was finally stopped after asking staff for help, the teen was ecstatic, later saying he was “very surprised” to find out he would go on to the next round.

Meghan told Jakob: “I think I made a terrible mistake and there’s no one else like you in the competition.” If you forgive me and take this [golden ticket] we’d love to have you in the top 50.’
