Director Robinson and screenwriter McKendrick reportedly came up with an idea for the new movie that was a hit with executives when they pitched it in 2022.

It didn’t hurt that Robinson is enjoying the success of his Netflix movie Do Revenge, which stars Riverdale’s Maya Hawke and Camila Mendes.

She also has experience in Marvel films, having contributed to the script for Thor: Love And Thunder and was a consulting producer on the Disney+ series Hawkeye.

The studio was also reportedly interested in Robinson and McKendrick’s plan to pair the original stars with a new, younger cast, which is similar to the recent Scream movies.

Ideally, the movie would make the new cast popular enough to continue the franchise even if Hewitt and Prinze don’t stick around.
