  • Garside has been dropped by the legendary Johnny Lewis
  • It comes when the boxer chose reality TV over a fight
  • It has left question marks over the next step in the media darling’s career.

Rising boxing star and media darling Harry Garside has been sensationally dismissed by legendary trainer Johnny Lewis for choosing a reality TV show over a blockbuster Main Event fight.

The 25-year-old rose to popular fame after becoming the first Australian in three decades to win a boxing medal (bronze) at an Olympic Games, and he breaks almost every stereotype in the book.

Fond of wearing dresses, shiny nail polish, and proud to embrace his femininity despite being a straight boxer; Garside is now cashing in on his newfound fame by accepting a spot on the popular Channel 10 show ‘I’m a celebrity…Get me out of here!

Since turning pro, the lefty is 3-0 after winning gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and bronze in Tokyo, though despite his claims he was keen to become world champion. It sounds like you might have conflicting priorities.

And Lewis, who trained Australian legend Jeff Fenech, is having none of that and has cut ties with Garside as a result.

“The ingredients to be a world champion are hard work and commitment,” Lewis told the daily telegraph.

‘You can’t keep provoking fights. There are no shortcuts in the fighting game.

Garside, who now has more than 92,000 followers on Instagram, is a regular at social events, red carpets and television appearances.

His effervescent nature, individuality, and incredible athleticism make him a popular personality, and that will be put to the test when he begins filming in March.

If he wins the crown, he would be named King of the jungle, but Lewis, one of the best coaches Australia has ever produced, is stunned. Garside gives up the chance to have a big Main Event fight on Foxtel in his hometown of Melbourne. .

Main had heralded Garside as a potential world champion after his successful move into professional boxing; but Lewis believes that is now firmly on the back burner and will not be on his side.

“All of my great fighters over the years were 100 percent disciplined and dedicated to boxing,” Lewis said.

‘We had been talking to Harry about world titles and greatness. “I’m really disappointed, but I really wish him the best, although I’m not sure he’s choosing the right path.”

Aside from vying to be King of the Jungle, Garside’s next steps are now unclear.

Undefeated in his three-bout pro career, the 176cm lightweight hasn’t fought since May 2022, when he suffered a gruesome hand injury that required surgery.

Since then, he has been featured in numerous ad campaigns and wowed on the social circuit, inspiring a new generation of Australian men.

But does that mean that he will now leave his professional career behind?

Some have speculated if he will return to the amateur circuit and aim for a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Garfield has expressed in the past how he sees representing Australia and winning gold as one of his main goals, although he has also previously spoken of his hunger to fight for world titles.

Only Garside will know his next steps in the world of boxing, but the sky is certainly the limit for this star, whether in or out of the ring.
