Joao Cancelo may be too expensive to make his loan move permanent anytime soon, Bayern Munich boss Hasan Salihamidzic admits…

  • Joao Cancelo could be too expensive for Bayern Munich to buy him permanently
  • The player moved from Manchester City to Germany on transfer deadline day
  • Bayern’s sporting director said they may have a hard time buying him permanently.

Bayern Munich’s sporting director has admitted that Joao Cancelo could prove too expensive for the German giants to secure his services permanently.

Cancelo moved from Manchester City to Bayern on a deadline date, on loan until the end of the current season, with a purchase option for 70 million euros (62.8 million pounds sterling).

But Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has said it might be too much financially for the Portuguese full-back to join the club on a long-term deal.

Via Get German Football News, Salihamidzic told Bild: ‘We played with open cards. The most important thing is that João feels comfortable in Munich and can play in the round of 16.

“But we also told him clearly that this sum is difficult for us to imagine in the years to come.”

There is hope Bayern Munich can lower Manchester City’s asking price for Cancelo following his loan spell at the German giants.

Therefore, Bayern could keep the 28-year-old defender, who Salihamidzic rated highly for years before his arrival at the Allianz Arena.

Salihamidzic is optimistic that a deal can be reached for Cancelo, previously saying: “But I have also learned: if all parties want a common solution, they can achieve that in the end too.” He knows that he has been one of our dream players for years.

Cancelo made his Bayern debut last week. He featured for 71 minutes in their 4-0 cup win at Mainz, setting up Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s first goal.

He is set to make his Bundesliga debut when they travel to Wolfsburg on Sunday, with Bayern looking to climb back to the top of the table after being overtaken by Union Berlin.

On his move to the German giants, Cancelo claimed his departure from Manchester City had nothing to do with a reported training ground break with Citizens boss Pep Guardiola.
