Fans from across the country have been sharing their incredulity at Nottingham Forest reaching an agreement with Wolves to sign midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White for a possible £42.5million.

The initial feel has been agreed at £25m but could rise to £42.5m with £7-10m in achievable add-ons and further bonuses.

Gibbs-White has impressed for England at youth levels and enjoyed a solid season in the Championship last season, but his lack of Premier League experience has led some to question the high transfer fee.

If the deal does go through, the 19-year-old will become Steve Cooper’s 16th signing of the summer.

‘£44.5m for an average midfielder. That’s more than the combined then-record transfer fees for Rio Ferdinand (£29m) + Alan Shearer (£15m),’ one fan said.

‘Even if you brought inflation into it, that’s an insane price. Football clubs live in a different reality to fans.’

Another asked ‘where did Nottingham Forest get their sugar Daddy?’ and compared the club’s level of spending to French giants PSG.

Even Specsavers took a dig, posting: ‘Wipes eyes. Wipes eyes. Wipes eyes. Still says £44.5m…’

Others focused on the midfielder’s lack of experience. ‘Just an obscene fee for him, astonishing amount of money to pay for a kid who’s never broke into the prem side for wolves. Madness.’

Another added: ‘£44.5m! For a player that’s hardly kicked a ball in the league. English-tax done it again!’

Some questioned how a newly-promoted club such as Forest had been able to spend such a big sum, which took their splurge for the summer past £150 million, and tweeted messages such as: ‘Where is financial fair play?’

Wolves were seen to have got an excellent deal for their highly-rated youngster, with one fan saying: ‘Wolves will be laughing all the way to the bank.’

Despite the criticism of the transfer fee, there were some fans who felt Gibbs-White could be a promising signing for Forest.

‘Big money, but Cooper knows how much talent this kid has,’ remarked one fan, as others added ‘Forest be making moves bro they mean business’ and ‘playing under Steve Cooper he’ll be worth well over 40 mill after a season or two.’

The Forest manager does know the 22-year-old well after managing him to the U-17 World Cup with England.

After scoring 11 goals in 35 Championship games while on loan at Sheffield United last season, it will be up to Gibbs-White to prove his doubters wrong.

Forest are next in action against Everton on Saturday.
