Bodycam video, pictures show arrest of ex-NBA star accused of punching daughter at Brickell Key condo

MIAMI (WSVN) – Police body camera video and crime scene footage captured the arrest of former NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire after he allegedly punched his teenage daughter, prompting an assault charge that has since been dropped.
Body cam footage shows the 6-foot-10 former player walking in handcuffs through the lobby of a luxury Brickell Key condo on Dec. 17.
Moments later, he is seen getting into a City of Miami Police SUV.
Stoudemire, 40, had called police after what was first described as a custody dispute. After officers responded, they learned of her daughter’s injuries.
“He has a swelling on the back of his head,” a lifeguard said in radio broadcasts.
Body camera shows the victim as she told officers her account of the incident near the lobby entrance.
“He just hit me in the mouth and started slapping me and stuff,” he said.
“How many times did he hit you?” an officer asked Stoudemire’s daughter.
“I don’t know. A lot,” he said.
“Fist or open hand?” asked the officer.
“Fist,” the teen replied.
Crime scene images captured the teen’s injuries and bloody clothing.
Stoudemire was a six-time NBA All-Star. During a playoff game against the Miami Heat, he made headlines when he smashed a fire extinguisher case.
Stoudemire went on to play for the Heat, where he finished his career, and recently graduated from the University of Miami with a master’s degree.
After being released from jail on bail, Stoudemire denied the allegations. In a statement, he wrote: “I could never see myself assaulting anyone, especially my children.”
His arrest form reads in part: “The defendant stated that the victim was sad that she received a beating from him for being disrespectful and a liar.”
On Tuesday, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office dropped the misdemeanor assault charge, saying that although they have photographs showing the victim’s injuries, “without the victim’s sworn testimony, the state has no basis of good faith to bring charges against the defendant. ”
In the days after Stoudemire’s arrest, the state attorney’s office also said they could not contact his victim, who is a minor.
