ALISON BOSHOFF: All Quiet On The Western Front Director Ed Berger Reveals The Crew Were In Tears Filming Heartbreaking War Scenes

Audiences have found the ‘crater scene’ in All Quiet On The Western Front exhausting, and director Ed Berger reveals that it also brought some crew members to tears.

Berger said his British cinematographer cried during the four days it took to film the scene, in which Paul Baumer (Felix Kammerer) encounters a wounded French soldier during trench warfare in World War I.

“I started to hear a noise,” Berger said. “Eventually, I realized that Danny, my cinematographer, was crying.

“He had been raised by his grandfather, who grew up during World War II hating the Germans.

“But somehow, seeing this, Danny realized that we are all the same.”

Touching: All quiet on the Western Front, director Ed Berger has revealed that the crew broke down in tears while filming the harrowing war scenes.

Netflix’s All Quiet On The Western Front is a 2022 epic anti-war film based on the 1929 novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque.

Star Felix Kammerer recently revealed that he was thrilled when he found out that the German war film received 14 BAFTA nominations.

With its impressive number of nominations, the critically acclaimed film equaled a record for the most nominated non-English language film in BAFTA history.

Since then, he’s also become a top Oscar contender, garnering nine Academy Award nominations.

The Austrian actor, who plays German soldier Paul Bäumer, reacted to the shocking news on Instagram.

Felix wrote: ‘Thank you BAFTA!!! This is incredible! Kudos to the best director @eeedwardberger, the most wonderful @lisychristl29a and the amazing @h.merker and of course my partner in crime @albrecht.schuch and all the fantastic team behind this film. See you in London.

Among its 14 nominations, All Quiet On The Western Front received nominations for Best Picture, Casting, Costume Design, Editing, and Cinematography.

Albrecht Schuch has also been nominated for Best Supporting Actor, while Edward Berger was recognized for Best Director.

It was also nominated in the Film Not In English Language category, where it competes with Corsage, Decision To Leave, The Quiet Girl, and Argentina, 1985.

His other nods were for makeup and hairstyling, original score, production design, special visual effects, sound, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Meanwhile, Germany’s submission to the Academy Awards earned it not only recognition in the Best International Film category, but a total of nine Oscar nominations overall.

Those accolades include Best Picture, as well as Best Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography, Original Score, Visual Effects, Sound, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Production Design.
