  • Chris Eubank Jr has given ‘every indication’ that he will activate his rematch clause
  • The 33-year-old player’s entourage has no more than two weeks to activate the clause
  • Smith, however, is more focused on securing a fight against Gennadiy Golovkin.

Chris Eubank Jr has given ‘every indication’ that he will activate his rematch clause against Liam Smith after suffering a fourth-round knockout loss at Manchester Arena last month.

BOXXER CEO Ben Shalom has revealed that a rematch ‘at Anfield in May’ is a genuine possibility, with Eubank Jr ‘really looking forward to fighting again’.

Smith, however, has made no secret of his desire to face two-time unified middleweight champion Gennadiy Golovkin, having emphatically overcome last month’s challenge in just four rounds.

In the aftermath of Eubank Jr’s loss, his representatives weighed whether to appeal to the British Boxing Board of Control, alleging that Smith had made contact with his elbow during the fight.

Shalom has indicated that the 33-year-old’s team does not have more than fifteen days to activate the rematch clause, which seems very likely at this point according to the promoter.

He said sky sports: ‘We are listening to all the indications that they are going to shoot. We know that Chris really wants to fight again. His pride is hurt, he definitely wants a rematch from what I heard, and ultimately, Liam wants the biggest names and the big nights.

He wants Golovkin. He’s in Eubank’s hands and we can’t really look past that until time is up and hopefully he wants the rematch.

“I cannot see a better option for Eubank Jr at the moment. We look forward to it formally in writing from Wasserman.

As Smith is an avid Liverpool supporter, Anfield has been proposed as a possible host stadium, although the rematch would have to be arranged for the end of the football season in May.

Shalom continued: “If we can make sure the event takes place close enough to the last game of the season, which I think is the weekend of [May] 21, then there is a chance. If we could get to Anfield it would be at the end of May.

‘Liam wants to watch the Golovkins now. ‘[Kell Brook], that’s still a great name for Liam Smith. He feels that he has dealt with Eubank.

‘He wants three more fights [in his career]. He feels like he’s in the best shape of his life, he feels like he’s boxing better than ever, he really wants to take advantage of the shape he’s in.

He wants to fight for a world title again. He will deal with Eubank if necessary. Kell Brook, Golovkin, those are the kinds of names he wants. It’s the rematch of Golovkin, Brook, Eubank, I think those are the obvious three.
