The 22-year-old man, whose name cannot be identified for legal reasons, allegedly murdered 19-year-old college student Arnima Hayat at a unit in North Parramatta in January 2022. He was charged separately with harassing and intimidating his father, Abu Hayat.

Court papers read at Bankstown Local Court in western Sydney on Monday revealed that the muscular man got into a fierce argument with Mr Hayat, after turning up at his home on the evening of October 8, 2021.

He told them he would marry their daughter, then 18, something his parents disapproved of, Judge Jennifer Giles told the court.

Mr. Hayat had told his daughter’s future husband: “If you want to marry Arnima, we want to meet your parents first before we consider allowing the marriage.”

When an argument broke out, Arnima and her fiancé went to the apartment of a neighbor and friend of the Hayat family, the court heard.

At around 8:45 pm, Mr. Hayat began receiving calls from an unknown mobile phone number.

She answered the fourth call and her daughter’s boyfriend was “angry and began abusing” Mr. Hayat “and making threats of harm.”

Ms Giles said the offender said to his girlfriend’s father: ‘are you a man or are you a lady? Why can’t you make up your mind?

I want a quick decision.

Two hours later, Mr. Hayat attended Campsie police station, where police told him that the young man had admitted to police that he cursed and abused the older man over the phone.

After hearing the offender’s story and being denied bail, Giles Magistrate looked at a document revealing that the man had later been charged with the murder of Ms Hayat.

Who is the victim of the (alleged) murder? she asked. ‘Oh, it’s Arnima, oh no. My gosh, that’s horrible…everything is falling into place.

Ms Giles sentenced the 22-year-old (right) to five months in prison, effective immediately, on the charge of harassment.

They also put him on an AVO for life so he wouldn’t get anywhere near Abu Hayat and his family. The youth’s defense attorney, Mark Rozalky, told the magistrate that the offender “will probably be in pretrial detention for a considerable period of time.”

Outside court, Abu Hayat told Daily Mail Australia that his wife and youngest daughter were currently in his native Bangladesh and had called him “in tears” from the capital Dhaka after Monday’s hearing.

He said that since the death of his 19-year-old daughter in January last year they have not coped.

“My family is broken,” he said.

‘My wife is always crying. Every day we talk about my daughter… (we) sometimes don’t sleep all night.’

The man’s murder charge will be brought before a court at a later date.
