Ipswich 0-0 Burnley: Goalless draw at Portman Road sees Championship leaders Vincent Kompany forced into a replay against their League One opponent

  • Ipswich had several chances against their Championship opponents in the first half
  • Vaclav Hladky made a couple of solid saves in the second half to deny Nathan Tella
  • But despite some late chances, both sides were unable to break the deadlock.

The goals ran out for Championship leaders Burnley, who must try again at Turf Moor to shake off Ipswich and reach the fifth round of the FA Cup.

The League One hosts, who are also the top scorers in their division, got off to a good start and could have gone ahead in the second minute if George Hirst, played by Kayden Jackson, had scored.

Marcus Harness came even close immediately afterwards with a chip that bounced off the top of the Burnley bar.

Kompany’s much-changed squad – only four started their last Championship success besides this one – looked shaky at the back, with centre-back Jordan Beyer showing a yellow card in early exchanges.

Jay Rodriguez came close with a shot up before Clarets goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell had to deflect Jackson’s effort from a tight angle.

Beyer was lucky to stay on the field after going over Jackson’s body as the first half ended goalless.

Darko Churlinov saw a decent Burnley chance deflected early in the second half before Nathan Tella forced Town goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky into a clever save.

The Czech was needed again seconds later to deflect a shot from Rodríguez, who was imagining his chances of beating him from outside the area.

Ipswich were against, but defender Luke Woolfenden scored with a flick after Burnley struggled to clear a corner.

Both teams made a triple substitution around the hour mark, and soon after Burnley debuted new signing Lyle Foster, the South African striker.

It was his teammate Anass Zaroury who almost broke the deadlock, but the man who scored a brace in a 4-2 win at Bournemouth in the third round saw his shot go wide.

Town substitute Conor Chaplin almost caught Peacock-Farrell with another cross in stoppage time, but it followed up scoreless.
