A 15-year-old boy has been found exhausted but safe after falling asleep in a shipping container and waking up six days later 2,000 miles from where he started.
The young man was found trapped in the container during a game of hide-and-seek with friends in Chittagong, Bangladesh on January 11.
After falling asleep, he was locked in the container and sailed the container ship Integra across the Indian Ocean the next day.
Port staff and Malaysian police found him in Port Klang almost a week later, on January 17, exhausted, dehydrated and crying for food.
The boy, identified only as Fahim, was found with a fever and taken to nearby Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital for treatment, where his condition has since been described as stable.
The moment police released a boy after he spent five days locked in a shipping container while crossing the Indian Ocean nearly 2,000 miles from Bangladesh to Malaysia in January.
Fahim was discovered after a staff member heard banging on one of the containers.
The Marine Police Force, the local immigration department and the health department came to investigate.
Fahim was filmed leaving the box surrounded by staff and local authorities.
In the video, he is clearly dehydrated and confused, unable to speak the local language.
He speaks to appear before the locals before being placed on a stretcher, scratching himself and covered with a blanket.
Fahim is then taken to the hospital, where he remains for now.
Police in Port Klang, Malaysia, released the boy after a worker heard a bang while inspecting the container on January 17.
Video footage from the moment the boy, named Fahim, was released shows him blinking in the sunlight and appearing exhausted and unsteady.
At first, the authorities feared that Fahim was a victim of human trafficking, but they soon managed to contact the boy, who is recovering.
Deputy Police Commissioner Cha Hoong Fong said: “There was no foul play in the incident.”
Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution bin Ismail told local media: “When the ship arrived at West Port and the container was unloaded, the authorities found the child inside.”
It is the only one found inside the container. A police report was filed and the boy, who has a fever, was taken for a medical examination.
‘We are now in the process of repatriating him.
“We are not linking this to human smuggling because the initial investigation found that he entered the container, fell asleep and (was transported to) Malaysia.”
Police added that Fahim’s case had been turned over to immigration officials so that he could be sent back home on the same ship.
