Matt Lucas Reveals He And David Walliams Are Writing Together Again And Quit Their Jobs To Do It

Matt Lucas has revealed that he and David Walliams are writing together again and said they quit their jobs to create their new show.

The comedian, 48, admitted that the two thought it was “time” to brainstorm and build concepts, as they had not worked together since their last comedy series Come Fly With Me, which aired in 2011.

It comes after children’s book author David, 51, sensationally left his position as a judge on Britain’s Got Talent, weeks after he was forced to apologize for describing an elderly contestant as a ‘c***’ .

Speaking on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, Matt revealed: ‘David Walliams and I started writing together again.

“We just thought it was time, so we quit our jobs and decided to do that. I mean I still do Fantasy Football League, obviously.

‘We started last week. We got together and started brainstorming.

“We have an idea for a new show and we need a few more brainstorming sessions, but we know how we want the show to be, what the concept is.

We are very excited about this. It will be a show with us playing many characters.

“But we have to write the treatment and we have to go and present it and see if anyone wants to do it. But if someone wants to do it, we’ll be happy to do it.’

Late last year, Matt announced that he would step down as host of The Great British Bake Off after three series, citing his heavy workload as the reason for leaving.

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that David resigned from Britain’s Got Talent ahead of its 2023 series, weeks after he was forced to apologize for describing an elderly contestant as a ‘c***.

In a recent snap, shared on Matt and David’s Instagram accounts, the couple appeared to be in fine form as they flashed big smiles and hugged each other.

Matt kept it casual in a red sweater while David cut a relaxed figure in a black hooded sweater as they appeared to be hard at work on their computers.

Along with the snap, Matt teased that he might be working with David once again, simply captioning the post: “Writing.”

The comedy duo worked together for years on shows like Come Fly With Me, Little Britain, and their spin-offs.

But their relationship turned rocky during a feud that lasted from 2011 to around 2018, during which time they were not seen together in public.

In his 2018 autobiography, Matt revealed how tensions between the couple flared in 2005 during their Little Britain Live tour, leading to a spectacular backstage brawl.

However, the pair reconciled in recent years and reunited on screen for a Red Nose Day sketch earlier this year, and now they seem to be working together once again.

It comes after Matt revealed that he left his role as host of The Great British Bake Off after three series earlier this week.

He has co-hosted the Channel 4 show along with Noel Fielding since 2020, but has now stepped down from his role, citing his heavy workload as the reason.

On social media, he wrote: ‘Bye Bake Off! It has been a delightful experience and I cannot imagine a more fun way to spend my summers.

“But it became clear to me that I can’t present both Fantasy Football League and Bake Off along with all my other projects.

“So after three seasons and 51 episodes, I am happily passing the baguette to someone else.

“I would like to give my sincere thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 and to Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the team and of course the wonderful bakers for welcoming me to the tent.

“I wish the best to whoever takes over and can’t wait to tune in to the next series not knowing who won!”

Matt joined the show in series 11, replacing fellow comedian Sandi Toksvig, who left the show after three seasons.

David Walliams’ schedule was released after leaving Britain’s Got Talent, following an alleged incident with a contestant.

During the audition, an older actor joked with the judges in which he made fun of David. After the audition, the retiree left, at which point David is said to have called him a ‘c***’ three times.

In another instance, after a female contestant auditioning on the same show walked offstage, he commented, “She’s like the kind of boring girl you meet in the pub who thinks you want to fuck her but you don’t… She’s The last thing on your mind, but she’s like, ‘Yeah, I bet you do!’

David, who along with fellow judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon were in talks to return for a tenth series, is ‘under the microscope’, with some senior staff saying he should be fired immediately.

Amanda and Simon have weighed in on the scandal surrounding David after offensive comments he made about contestants on Britain’s Got Talent were leaked.

Despite the backlash, Amanda publicly endorsed her co-star this week when he proudly declared himself “Team David.”

Speaking about the future of Britain’s Got Talent, Amanda told Good Morning Britain: ‘I’d like to see the judging panel as before. I think we are a great team, we are a family.

When asked directly if she was ‘Team David,’ she replied, ‘Of course I’m team David.’
