A woman who turned 100 says the secret to longevity has been avoiding strange men and working with children to keep her heart young.

Olive Westerman, from South Kirby, West Yorkshire, spent much of her life traveling the world with her late husband Sam, who worked as a writer and travel clerk, and lived in Singapore for three years.

The couple had no children and spent their days exploring the world.

When asked how she had lived such a long life, she also said that her job as a children’s nurse had kept her young at heart.

The centenarian celebrated her 100th birthday with afternoon tea with her fellow nursing home residents.

And in a touching moment, the staff continued the tradition her late husband Sam started by gifting her a bottle of Estee Lauder perfume for the big day.

Olive from South Kirby, West Yorkshire, offered her words of wisdom for longevity, and apparently not talking to men you don’t know is the way to go: ‘Avoid talking to strange men and you’ll be fine.

‘I think the best advice I could give you is to just be happy and glad to be alive, and make the most of what you have.

‘Over the years I have spent a lot of time working with children, and this will certainly help you stay young at heart!

“I actually can’t believe I’m 100 now, but it feels amazing. He was absolutely thrilled to receive a card from King Carlos and Camila.

Olive turned 100 on January 16, 2022 at the Deewater Grange residence in Chester and enjoyed high tea at Inglewood Manor.

The centenarian is well known in the household for her sense of humor and her love of travel.

She said: ‘I’ve spent some time living abroad and my favorite place to live was Singapore, I loved it there.

“It was such an interesting and exciting place to be, and so different from England.”

Olive added: ‘My husband and I met at the local church we used to attend every Sunday. We got to chatting one day after mass and hit it off right away.

“What I loved most about him was his kind and gentle nature, and the fact that he was always trying to help others.”
