‘What a jolt’: LA is hit by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Malibu waking up residents who describe it as ‘like a passing train’

Los Angeles was hit by a magnitude 4.2 earthquake off the coast of Malibu on Wednesday morning.

Residents said they were woken up by the quake, with one saying it felt “like a train going by” in a post on Twitter. ‘That was a cocktail shaker!’ another wrote.

The alerts said the quake struck at about 2 a.m. Wednesday, 28 miles southwest of Los Angeles and about 10 miles south of the Malibu coast.

According to the National Weather Service, the quake struck at a depth of one mile and a tsunami warning was not issued.

A Canoga Park resident said on Twitter that they felt the earthquake as well as the aftershocks. Another said they felt it in Agoura Hills.
