Cowboys kicker Brett Maher misses several warmup kicks and gets a visit from owner Jerry Jones

Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher got a visit from the boss during a frustrating pregame warmup ahead of Sunday’s Divisional Round playoff against the San Francisco 49ers.

After missing a playoff-record four extra points in last week’s Wildcard win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Maher missed several doable kicks in Santa Clara Sunday afternoon before billionaire owner and manager Jerry Jones Cowboys general, approached him.

It’s unclear what was said, but Jones seemed to cheer him up during the brief exchange. Earlier, the 49ers seemed to take issue with Maher’s warmup, but allowed him to resume.

Maher was perfect on all six field goals reporters got to see at Dallas Cowboys practice Thursday.

The embattled kicker who made NFL history, either in the regular season or the playoffs, by losing his first four extra points in a wild-card win over Tampa Bay must be taking advice from star running back Ezekiel Elliott.

That is our brother. We’re not going to turn our backs on him,’ Elliott said after practice Thursday. ‘Last week, we really didn’t need it. But this week we probably will. So put that (stuff) together’.

Hey, the Cowboys are in good spirits after ending an eight-game losing streak on the road in the playoffs with a 31-14 win over Tom Brady and the Buccaneers.

Now it’s their six-game losing streak in the divisional round, the longest streak since the 1970 merger, when Dallas (13-5) visits San Francisco (14-4) on Sunday night.

Maher's future with the Cowboys was in doubt after the Wildcard round game against the Bucs.

On Thursday, Maher took a big step to kick against the 49ers based on what reporters saw in the gusty winds at practice.

Tristan Vizcaíno followed with 2-of-5 errors a day after the Cowboys signed him to the practice squad in case Maher continued his yips.

Yes, special teams coach John Fassel believes in yips just as much as he believes in sticking with Maher despite the bizarre meltdown.

“I believe in a hot hand and I believe in yips,” Fassel said Tuesday, the day after Maher’s historic misses.

‘Sometimes you wonder how you get to the yips, and sometimes you wonder how you get to the hot hand. And I think it’s approach the line and shoot. He missed a couple of free throws.

Well, it was a little more dramatic than that, just from the looks on the faces of Maher, Fassel and many others on the Dallas bench when a 24-0 lead was supposed to be 28-0.

Not to mention, quarterback Dak Prescott swore a few times as he wondered why the Cowboys weren’t going for 2-point conversions instead.

Prescott calmed down enough Monday night to try to pick up his kicker, and he was even more supportive with several more days to think it over.

“I’m a ‘Money Maher’ fan,” Prescott said. “I haven’t lost confidence and I’m not going to push my game or do anything outside of my area because of unusual misses from him. I think he’s going to be himself again this week like he’s been here in practice, and I trust that guy all the time.

Maher, who didn’t appear in the locker room when it was open to reporters Thursday, made money most of the season after saving the Cowboys from themselves when a training camp kicking contest went awry.

The 33-year-old with four seasons of NFL experience was 29 of 32 from the field, a 91 percent conversion rate that ranked in the top 10 in the league.

Two of the misses were for 59 yards, and Maher connected on a 60-yard pass against Minnesota to extend his NFL career high to four kicks of at least 60. Maher did that twice after officials stopped play for a review while the ball was being delivered. he broke on the first try.

“He dunked it twice in a row,” rookie left tackle Tyler Smith said. ‘That Bengals game, to win the game (20-17 on the last play of Week 2). That was a long field goal. He sank it. He knows that he is very capable. We know that he is very capable.

The addition of Vizcaíno gives the Vaqueros the flexibility to make a trade until Saturday. It was not fashionable in that way on Thursday.

“It doesn’t take away from our confidence in Brett,” coach Mike McCarthy said of Vizcaino’s addition. “I think he is part of the responsibility. This is nothing out of the ordinary for us.
