CHRIS SUTTON: Mikel Arteta was over the top and needs to control his emotions better after being booked against Man United… the Arsenal manager was singled out for his actions against Newcastle just a few weeks ago and it’s starting to become a habit.

I wonder if the referees have had a meeting about Mikel Arteta’s behavior on the touchline and are now after him?

He was booked on Sunday after running down the line trying to influence Anthony Taylor stating that Luke Shaw had committed four fouls. He needs to control himself. Shaw’s foul on Bukayo Saka was not a booking and Arteta’s reaction was over the top.

His behavior against Newcastle was the same, and there was a lot of coverage as a result of that.

I know the fans like to see the coach showing passion, but there is a line you must not cross. If players see Arteta lose control like that, they can get sucked in. Arsenal are having a brilliant season, but it’s important for the players to know that their manager is in control of their emotions, because they will feed off of that.

Gary Neville backed the referee’s decision to award Arteta a booking for his indiscretion on the touchline.

He told Sky Sports: “He charged about 15 yards down the touchline towards the referee, for which he was shown a yellow card.”

Neville also said: “I was here for the Newcastle game and he was all over the game, Mikel Arteta, but on a few occasions he wasn’t needed.”

In his column for Sportsmail, former Gunners player Martin Keown said Manchester United could not cope with Saka and Eddie Nketiah inside an unforgiving Arsenal side.

While former Manchester United captain Roy Keane told Sky Sports the defeat was a “reality check” for Erik ten Hag’s side, who struggled to cope with absences including the suspended Casemiro.
