Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) compared a New York neighborhood in Queens to China during a fellow Social Democrat’s inauguration ceremony.

AOC was filmed singing the praises of newly elected state senator Kristen Gonzalez, who defeated Elizabeth Crowley during last year’s state senate race.

Standing in front of a small event held in Astoria on Thursday, part of AOC’s speech was posted on Twitter in which the Democrat made the statement.

She is heard calling Astoria, a predominantly liberal-leaning neighborhood according to the voting results, as the ‘People’s Republic of Astoria’ in the speech and referring to a plot line in the Marvel series ‘The Avengers’.

“Kristen is now with us as the youngest woman ever elected to the state of New York,” AOC is heard saying in the 36-second video posted to the New York City Democratic Socialists of America Twitter account.

‘Kristen is like the last infinity stone for the People’s Republic of Astoria. With her election, we now have DSA members at all levels of the office.’

The Infinity Stones are fictional items in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and play a major role in the first three phases, also called the ‘Infinity Saga’, of the MCU.

Brooklyn Councilman Ari Kagan, who grew up in Belarus under the rule of the Soviet Union, criticized AOC and its socialist allies, telling New York Post it seems they ‘worship the failed communist ideas that so many people fled from’.

“His statement is an insult not only to Chinese Americans who left the communist People’s Republic for a chance to live in a free democratic society, but to all Americans,” he said.

“The last thing we need here is to recreate the system in which the government suppresses the market economy, the exchange of ideas, a free press and independent courts.”

The joke came during the swearing-in ceremony for Gonzalez, who beat Crowley in a big way in the 59th District Democratic primary, representing parts of Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Long Island City.

González was officially sworn in as a senator on January 4, saying, “It means a lot that, as of today, the youngest woman ever elected to the New York State Senate is a Latina and a Democratic Socialist.”

Both AOC and González hold values of Democratic Socialism, which according to the DSA website, refers to someone who wants to create “a system where ordinary people have a real voice in our workplaces, neighborhoods and society.”

“Capitalism is a system designed by the owning class to exploit the rest of us for their own benefit,” the website reads.
