West Ham boss under fire David Moyes has claimed he has transformed a ‘divided club’ and says new signing Danny Ings can help bring the Hammers to safety.
Moyes is reportedly facing the ax should West Ham suffer a defeat in their decisive relegation clash with Everton on Saturday.
The Hammers, currently 18th in the league, have won just four games all season, while the 19th-ranked Toffees have only won three.
David Moyes has hit back at critics ahead of a vital game for West Ham against Everton
Moyes was asked about the situation at his former club Everton, where board members were advised not to attend their game against Southampton last week.
He drew a comparison to the situation he inherited at West Ham in 2020 when fans staged protests against the club’s board.
“I remember when I came here, I was only here three or four games, we had fans running around the field,” Moyes said.
“It was a terrible time for us and I think one of the most important things that needs to happen as a football club is to come together.”
‘That needs the fans, that needs the players, the directors, everyone to be together.
“It’s the only thing that happens here at West Ham, I don’t see a divided club here and I have to say that since my time at Everton, I have never seen a divided club at Everton.
Moyes insisted the club was now united compared to the division he inherited in 2020.
Moyes led West Ham to safety in 2020 before qualifying the club for the Europa League the following season, overseeing a run to the semi-finals of the tournament.
The Hammers also remain in the Europa Conference League this season, and Moyes suggests he has overseen a rise in expectations for the club since the start of his second spell as manager.
“West Ham bought me twice before to rescue the club and lift them up.
Then we’ve had two seasons where we finished sixth and seventh in the Premier League and finished in Europe.
“We’ve been to almost every European city in the last two years, which has been fantastic for West Ham.”
The West Ham boss said he has helped raise expectations for the club in recent years.
‘We received 60,000 in the stadium. Not many clubs in the world can get 60,000.
“I honestly think we’ve had a great time here over the past few years and I have to say thank you for the support of the board.”
West Ham’s hopes of breaking out of the relegation zone have been boosted by the arrival of Ings from Aston Villa, with the striker completing a £12m move.
Moyes has claimed that Ings is ‘as good as it gets’, suggesting the 30-year-old’s Premier League experience may help the Hammers in the coming months.
Moyes believes Danny Ings’ experience can help West Ham’s fight against relegation
“He’s what we need, we need someone who knows the league,” Moyes said.
“We took a look at some players to strengthen, but I wanted to bring someone who wasn’t a risk in terms of knowledge of the league.”
‘Danny is as good as it gets.
“The paperwork was done on time and we have to wait for the registration confirmation.”
Gianluca Scamacca faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering a knee injury
Ings is expected to be available for a six-point relegation match against Everton on Saturday at London Stadium, with the club submitting documentation to the Premier League before Friday’s midday deadline.
If Ings is available against Everton, the 30-year-old will look to continue his impressive record against the Toffees.
Ings has scored seven goals in 15 games against Everton during his career, which is his best tally against an opposing club.
Moyes said Ings will be added to the club’s forward options, and the West Ham manager confirmed Scamacca will be out “for a while” after picking up a knee injury.
