“I was sitting on the couch looking up names for the baby we were about to have and I was in [genealogy site] Family search.
Marcella said she was looking at the names of her grandfather, grandmother, great-grandfather, great-grandmother, and great-grandmother when she realized something was wrong.

“My husband is next to me in his own FamilySearch and he says, ‘Oh, that’s funny, we have the same names for grandma and grandpa,'” she said.
‘I look at this line and it’s all the same as mine. So I’m like, “Oh no, no, you’re still logged in to my account.”
“Then we start looking at him and realize my grandfather is his grandmother’s first cousin.”
The couple then called their respective grandparents to ask if they knew each other. Their suspicions turned out to be correct, and the couple soon learned that they actually have the same great-great-grandparents, making them third cousins.
‘Indeed, I sure do. They lived together when they were children,” Marcella said.
‘We (Marcella and her husband) are third cousins.’
She said she found it while she and her husband were looking for baby names while she was pregnant.

The couple (pictured) realized this by comparing the names of their grandparents and great-grandparents who were cousins. ‘My grandfather is his grandmother’s first cousin,’ she said.
Marcella revealed that they had previously won an award for ‘being next of kin at a neighborhood activity’.
“And when I go to my family reunion, he can also go to his at the same time,” she added.
Some people questioned how the couple didn’t find out before then.
‘How did they not notice this at the wedding?’ one person asked.
Another added: ‘Wait, how come they didn’t know this ahead of time?! Were your grandparents not at the wedding?
Marcella responded to these comments in another TikTok video, saying, “We got married in a courthouse after work on a Wednesday.”
She continued: “Let’s say we have the wedding, and my grandfather and grandmother were there, and we found out we were third cousins at the wedding, what were we supposed to do?”
But others didn’t really see much of it, considering they were third cousins.

The couple have been married for more than 10 years. Social media users were confused as to how they hadn’t found out about this before.
‘That’s far enough lol. It’s a crazy coincidence though,” said one TikTok user.
“Third cousins are pretty far apart,” someone else wrote.
Another quipped, “Say you’re from Utah without saying you’re from Utah.”
A handful of social media users also thought that Marcella should have kept this news to herself.
“I think you shouldn’t have told anyone,” said one person.
And it also seems that Marcella isn’t the only one to accidentally marry a distant relative.
‘Ancestry taught my husband and I that we are eighth cousins. They hardly count as cousins but it was still a shock,” wrote one TikTok user.
‘My husband’s parents were fifth cousins. I laughed when I heard this from his mom (I don’t think she liked my laugh),’ said another.
