Jacinda Ardern has announced that she will step down as New Zealand Prime Minister next month.

He made the announcement Thursday morning during a press conference, revealing that he will remain in office until February 7.

Ms Ardern, who was elected to the top job in 2017, said she would resign because she doesn’t have “enough in the tank”.

‘I’m leaving because such a privileged job comes with great responsibility. The responsibility of knowing when you are the right person to lead, and also when you are not,” he said.

‘I know when I have enough left in the tank to do it justice.

‘I’m human. We give everything we can for as long as we can and then it’s time. And for me, it’s time.

‘To Neve, mum can’t wait to be there when you start school next year. And with Clarke, let’s get married.

Ms Ardern found out she was pregnant with her first child before she became Prime Minister.

She gave birth to her daughter Neve on June 21, 2018.

She returned to work in August of that year after taking six weeks of maternity leave.

The 42-year-old planned to marry his long-term partner, Clarke Gayford, in January last year, but his plans were put on hold as the country battled the Omicron outbreak.

A caucus vote will be held on Sunday to choose a new party leader and a new prime minister.

Ms Ardern will remain as MP for Mt Albert until April.
