How a personal trainer’s smartwatch caused 15 armed police officers to show up at his Sydney gym while he was teaching a client

  • About 15 policemen showed up at the Sydney Muay Thai gym
  • They told one of the personal trainers that he had called them
  • But he didn’t, and it was only later that they found out that it had happened.

A stunned personal trainer revealed the astonishing reason his Apple Watch caused more than a dozen armed police officers to show up at his gym while he was teaching a class.

Jaime Alleyne, 34, a muay thai and boxing trainer at PTJ Gladesville on Sydney’s north shore, was in the middle of his first session with a client at around 7:45am on Tuesday when he noticed an officer loitering around the door of the gym

He asked the policeman if he needed any help and was told they had a report of a gunshot in the gym and that Mr. Alleyne himself had called them, except he never called and heard no shots.

The officer then asked a puzzled Mr. Alleyne who else was in the gym and he told them there were only two other trainers and a couple of patrons.

“The next minute about 15 officers showed up, including undercover, with several ambulances parked out front, and that’s when I started bricking up,” he said. news.com.au on Wednesday.

An officer advised him to check his dialed numbers, and sure enough, there was a call from his phone to 112, an alternative emergency services number, and a voicemail from a dispatcher telling him that the police and ambulance were on the way. .

It was then that Mr. Alleyne realized what must have happened.

She had been wearing her Apple Watch while training her client and noticed that pressure from the pads she was holding had pressed the side button to open the digital assistant, Siri.

He had removed his watch, but Siri was still active and then heard him yell “one, one, two” as he taught his client through punch combinations.

Finally, when the call went through the dispatcher, they heard the sound of thumps hitting the pads followed by him saying “nice shot” and assumed it was gunshots, and Siri automatically sent the location.

Alleyne said she was very apologetic, but praised the officers for their quick response.

“One of the officers said, ‘You have to fight one of us now,’ and I laughed and said, ‘It’s not going to be you, your big unit.’

He added that he has now disabled Siri on his watch.
