Idaho Lawmaker Sparks Fury After Comparing Women To COWS During Discussion Over Women’s Health Care

An Idaho lawmaker sparked outrage on social media after comparing women to cows during a conversation about women’s health care.

Republican Rep. Jack Nelsen, 67, was at the House Farm Committee’s first legislative session meeting this week when he decided to offer “definitive opinions” on women’s health.

‘I’m a lifelong dairy farmer, retired, still part owner of the dairy, grew up on the farm. I have milked a few cows, but I spent most of my time walking behind rows of cows,” said the newly elected official.

“So if you want some thoughts on repro (reproduction) and women’s health, I have some definite opinions,” she added with a laugh.

Nelsen’s comments were criticized on social media and the “embarrassed” lawmaker was forced to apologize.

“The way I phrased my statement on women and reproductive rights yesterday missed the mark,” she told the idaho statesman.

I am deeply sorry. I own up to the mistake and promise to do better in the future.’

The Idaho Democratic Party tweeted the video Thursday, saying, “Let’s be clear: Politicians like Jack Nelsen don’t have to mandate our reproductive health care decisions.” Period.’

“It’s nice to know that women’s health is just a ‘thing’ to him,” one person said in response to the video.

Another quipped: “Similarly, I’ve seen bulls castrated, so anytime Rep. Nelson wants an opinion on the state of his prostate, I’d be happy to give him some thoughts on his ‘health thing.’

“I used to have a Mr Potato Head which clearly makes me an expert in male reproduction and the men’s health ‘thing’,” someone else said.

However, one social media user asked people to show some mercy: “Please take note of his sincere apology today.”

Meanwhile, the video also went viral on Reddit, with more than 1,600 upvotes and hundreds of comments.

‘Did he just compare women to cows… what the fuck?’ one person said.

‘Yes, he has walked behind the cows, apparently all you need to know to be an expert on women’s reproductive rights. Come on, Idaho, is this your contribution? another person added.

He didn’t just “compare women to cows.” She admitted that her position on human reproductive rights is based on her experience raising cattle and milking cows,” someone else said.

“At some point, it’s up to the other people in the room to say, ‘Sorry to interrupt, but what the hell? Explain yourself.'”

‘Women and cows…basically the same thing from a moral and political perspective,’ someone else wrote.

A fourth person said: ‘He was so pleased with himself. It can be said that he has been waiting to deliver that line for a while. I personally loved the fact that no one laughed at his awkward misogyny.

‘Don’t you realize that the mammary glands and the uterus are extremely different organs?’ another Redditor wrote.

“I spent summers at my uncle’s ranch in Texas. I can milk a cow and turn a calf upside down. I wouldn’t even dream of comparing that to the years of medical school someone goes through to become an OB/GYN.

Nelson has been a “partner in dairy and farm operations in Jerome for 45 years,” according to his Idaho State Legislature Biography.

He was also previously a music instructor and teacher for over 20 years.

His hobbies include fly fishing, skiing, and time with his family and children.

He has been married to Emily for 42 years and their children include ‘Chris and his partner Toni, three girls; Greg and partner Leah; Matt and his wife Velia, two girls.
