A look back at the marriage of Noel Gallagher and Sara MacDonald as they announce their separation

As Noel Gallagher and Sara MacDonald have announced they are getting divorced after nearly 12 years of marriage, we take a look back at their 22-year relationship.

The estranged couple met in 2000 and tied the knot in a romantic ceremony in 2011 in the New Forest.

But over the years, music publicist Sara, 51, has found herself at the heart of the Oasis brothers’ toxic feud with Noel’s brother Liam, previously blaming her for being the reason the band it has not been reformed.

Here, we look back at their romance from the 55-year-old guitarist’s meeting Sara at an Ibiza club to the bitter feud between the brothers.

First date

Noel and Sara met in the year 2000 at a famous club in Ibiza called Space.

In an interview with FashionSara recalled how Noel approached her and asked her to hold his cigarettes and beer while he went to the bathroom before sharing a cab home.

Noel asked for her number, which Sara wrote down on a card, who told the publication that she kept it “like it was a fucking religious artifact” and that it was “love at first sight”.

When Sara left the island the next day, Noel had called.

The couple say they never pursued a relationship until Noel’s relationship with his wife Meg Mathews ended.

In a statement, released in 2001, Noel said he did not cheat and “left Meg because he could no longer tolerate her behavior.”

Their first date was at The Lanesborough Hotel, and the rest is history.

Wedding

The guitarist recalled to Vogue the first time he met his father-in-law who told him: ‘I want you to promise me you’re going to take care of my daughter,’ to which Gallagher replied: ‘Tbh mate, I expected her to take care of me.

They married at the Lime Wood Hotel in the New Forest in a £60,000 ceremony, with guests including Russell Brand looking on, but Liam said he wasn’t invited.

He goes on to say that he was not invited to my wedding. No one was at my wedding except Nic’s. [wife Nicole Appleton] mom and my mom.

‘Get over it, mate. I have not been invited to his wedding,’ Liam told the Chicago Sun Times.

Noel and Sara went to receive two children; Donovan, 15, and Sonny, 12. The rocker is also the father of his eldest daughter Anais, 22, from his previous relationship with his ex-wife Meg.

When Sara started dating Noel, she was on good terms with his brother, but the tide turned when she briefly split from the guitarist in 2002.

The music publicist first spoke out about the toxic feud between the two warring brothers in 2020, revealing that his son Donovan had never met his uncle.

Sara claimed that Liam called her “11 times in one night” calling her “fucking bitch this, fucking bitch that.”

The siblings’ relationship became increasingly difficult, with Sara recalling, in particular, a fight between them in a hotel room that led to Liam throwing her bag down the hall.

She said the fractured relationship between the two became “untenable and exhausting” and believed the feud was a case of family history repeating itself, claiming that Noel was ” singled out and harassed by his father”.

Sara said it was a “lonely, unpleasant place” for Noel.

The band finally broke up in 2009. But Liam has been increasingly vocal about his desire to reunite, saying the SE band will reunite with or without Noel.

Meanwhile, Noel told Vogue in 2020 that she occasionally comes close to agreeing.

“I’ve often thought ‘Let’s do a concert,'” he said. But I realized that I was only doing it to shut this fucking idiot up. The only other thing I could think of was to burn down his house or vandalize his car… but that’s not going to solve anything, is it?’

Meanwhile, later that year, Liam hinted that Sara was the reason an Oasis reunion wouldn’t take place.

A fan tweeted at him and asked, “Hi Liam, do you know why Noel hates the Oasis reunion so much?

While he responded by suggesting it was her fault, he wrote: “I told you before she got ready for it but you know who won’t let it because she doesn’t like oasis music.” [sic].

Noel and Sara issued a statement announcing their separation and that their two children “continue to be their priority.”

A spokesperson for Noel and Sara shared: ‘Noel Gallagher and Sara Macdonald have confirmed that the couple are divorcing.

‘Noel and Sara will continue together taking care of their children, who continue to be their priority. Noel and Sara ask the media to respect their privacy and that of our family at this time.’

While a source told him Sun: ‘It’s a big shame, but they’re trying to keep it civil.’

“Noel has moved on, but in time Sara might want to move back to London. They are constantly working on everything to minimize disruption.

Noel and Sara have been living in a £8m mansion on the South Downs near the Hampshire town of Petersfield since 2019, with their two young children.

But now the Don’t Look Back In Anger hitmaker is said to be living apart from his wife in north London.
