A beachgoer took issue with the CoolCabana craze after saying the popular open-tent shelter didn’t protect her family from the sun.

Jodie Thring took to social media this week with a photo of her $200 blue and white striped cabana after joking that it provided “no shade.”

It comes after the CoolCabana brand has been flying off the shelves, with tourists buying it up in droves in various colors and patterns.

But the Gold Coast mom posted a photo of the tall beach shelter on social media that showed the sun streaming in from the side.

The photo revealed their belongings underneath the product in what appears to be a late afternoon shot.

“I’m baffled as to why anyone would spend $190-$200 on a ‘cool’ cabin that doesn’t actually provide shade,” she quipped.

“So cool or should I say…so hot right now,” Ms Thring added.

An online commenter agreed with the mother saying that the blue carts were an eyesore.

‘Those beach carts make me laugh!’ she said. Watching all the tourists drag them across the sand.

But others defended the hot topic by trumpeting how easy they are to put on and take off.

‘Love ours. [We] I won’t go to the beach without it,’ said one commenter, while another said that it does protect from the sun, but it depends on the time of day.

The new sunscreen product has been sweeping Australia’s beaches, and sunbathers have embraced it, especially on the Gold Coast and Perth.

They stink. The beach at my house looks like a tent city. I wish they all went home,’ one complained.

“I think they’re dumb, better with something with sides,” another said, while another wrote, “So annoying when the whole beach is full of them though, they take up so much space.”

The CoolCabana brand comes with sand pockets that hold down the legs of the shade so it’s secure on windy days.

Buyers can get accessories with it and can buy a medium tent for $189 and $249 for a larger one.

But shoppers also opted for the smaller, cheaper Kmart-branded cabin, which was described as the “perfect copy” of the original, retailing for just $55.

Cabanas have also been given a thumbs up by health advocates, as they shield bathers from the harmful effects of the sun.

In Australia, melanoma is the most common cancer among people aged 20-39, with an Australian dying every six hours.
