Bettors have been frustrated after continued rain caused the Magic Millions race day to be officially postponed on the Gold Coast after just two races.
A secret vote of cyclists followed, where it was decided by a majority that it was not safe to continue.
The track was deemed too dangerous after at least 22mm of downpour since Friday.
At around 1:40pm local time, the stewards formally canceled the richest race day on the Queensland calendar.
The steep drop was affecting the riders’ visibility, and eight of the ten scheduled races were sensibly abandoned on the heavy-rated track.
Bettors were furious after continued rain caused the Magic Millions race day to be officially canceled on the Gold Coast on Saturday.
The track was deemed unfit for racing by stewards on the Glitter Strip after downpours since Friday.
Before the postponement, the competing hoops made the decision to continue race by race.
But when star jockey James McDonald reported that his mount slipped in the second race of the card while aboard Desperately, Queensland Racing Integrity Commission boss Josh Adams intervened.
“We asked the riding group (jockeys) to have a secret ballot to decide if they wanted to continue with the race meeting,” he said.
‘It was the riding group’s decision to withdraw their services.
“The stewards also voted and we agreed that the track is not (currently) safe to race on.”
The Magic Millions Classic and Magic Millions Guineas are expected to take place on Wednesday or Thursday.
When the news filtered through the track races was going to be suspended, many were not happy.
Keen punter Chris Ivkovic, who flew in from Sydney to watch the Magic Millions in person, was devastated by the result.
“My wife and I were hoping for a magical day,” he told Daily Mail Australia.
“Sadly, it turned into a day of nothing.”
Another racing enthusiast, ‘Nailor’, tweeted: ‘It’s an absolute joke that a meeting of this stature can be canceled after 12mm of rain… (it’s) laughable.’
