Hope Solo has given her verdict on the fallout between the Berhalter and Reyna families and says that Gio Reyna “seems like a whiny little kid” due to her parents fighting their battles.

Speaking on his podcast, Solo gave his verdict on the saga that has gripped US soccer so far in 2023 with former US international Eric Wynalda, who explained his own theory that the feud between the families has lasted “eight or nine months”.

“It’s sad, in my eyes it’s pathetic,” Solo said. ‘It’s a stain on the sport we love, no one wins out of it. Rosalind, Berhalter’s wife, is the only real victim here.

Reyna, 20, was surprisingly used as a substitute for Berhalter at the World Cup, and the striker was expected to be a central figure for the team in Qatar.

After the tournament, quotes surfaced from Berhalter talking about problems at camp in Qatar with a player who was almost sent home. It was later confirmed that she was Reyna and she posted on Instagram admitting that she lost focus but criticizing Berhalter for going public with the incident.

While asking Wynalda a question, Solo offered his point of view on how the situation makes Reyna look on his ‘Hope Solo Speaks’ podcast.

“I feel like he looks like a momma’s boy who never really came out from under his momma’s skirt,” Solo said. “I know it’s difficult and they’ve put him in a horrible position, but he’s a young man now.

‘How can he get out of his mom’s skirt and own this?’

Wyanalda replied, “When you frame it like that, it’s probably the best thing that ever happened to him because it’s never going to happen again.” She can say “Mom, Dad, when it comes to these things, don’t ever embarrass me like that again.”

He only responded, “Well, maybe he should go out there and say that publicly because right now he seems like a whiny kid, used to his parents fighting their battles.”

But Wynalda added: “But we don’t know if that was something he was aware of.” He didn’t write that, he didn’t pick up the phone. His mother did.

Reyna is now back with her club team, German heavyweight Borussia Dortmund, where the domestic season resumes on January 22 against Augsburg. He has played 16 times so far for Dortmund this season, scoring twice.

He only played 202 times for the US national team, winning the World Cup in 2015 and two Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012.
