She added: ‘I started the mission. She wore a hijab, glasses and a bricklayer’s uniform to go as unnoticed as possible. I ran the first 32 floors and overheated. I had to lie naked on the concrete floor to cool down a bit. I drank all the water I had.

Nikolau also noted that he had rented an apartment with a good view of the tower, so that he could conduct surveillance of the building. She spent several weeks researching details that would help her with the escalation.

The 118-story Merdeka Tower will be completed by mid-2023, according to the developer. A hotel will occupy the top 17 floors.

PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Bhd Chief Executive Officer Tengku Datuk Ab Aziz Tengku Mahmud said in August: “The offices can move in first while the hotel will be [ready] for the third quarter of next year.

The building is dwarfed only by the 2,716-foot Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which opened on January 4, 2010.
