Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium site for possible Bills-Chiefs AFC title game

The Atlanta Falcons’ Mercedes-Benz Stadium is named the neutral site by the NFL for the possible Bills-Chiefs AFC title game with the venue some 900 miles from Buffalo and Kansas City.

The Atlanta Falcons could end up welcoming the Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs to their home after the NFL announced that their Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host their potential AFC title game.

The league passed a resolution to move a potential Bills-Chiefs AFC Championship to a neutral site last Friday following the cancellation of the Bills vs. Cincinnati Bengals after Damar Hamlin’s cardiac arrest.

The Falcons’ Mercedes-Benz Stadium has been designated as the neutral location for the potential game on Sunday, January 29 at 6:30 pm ET.

“We are encouraged by Damar Hamlin’s continued improvement and progress in his recovery, and Damar and his family continue to be a priority for the entire NFL community,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement Thursday.

‘We are also grateful to Arthur Blank and the Atlanta Falcons for agreeing to host the AFC Championship Game in Atlanta should the Bills and Chiefs advance. We thank both clubs for their help in the planning process.

“We know that, if necessary, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium will provide a world-class environment for the competing teams, our fans and partners.”

The playoff changes came after Bills safety Hamlin collapsed and went into cardiac arrest during the first quarter of a Monday Night Football game on January 2.

The game had significant implications for both the 13-3 Bills and the 12-4 Bengals. The Bills, who finished as the No. 2 seed, now face the Miami Dolphins in the wild card round on Sunday afternoon.

The NFL would normally award playoff seeding on winning percentage, but that was complicated by the cancellation of last week’s game when the Bills played one game fewer than 16.

Hamlin was released from the hospital Wednesday as he continues his remarkable recovery less than 10 days after collapsing on the field.

The 24-year-old watched and cheered on his teammates as they beat the New England Patriots at Orchard Park on Sunday in front of a raucous home crowd holding signs wishing him a speedy recovery.
