Peyton Hillis is off a ventilator in hospital and ‘on the road to recovery’ as his girlfriend reveals a positive update on his progress after the former NFL star saved his children from drowning on a Florida beach.

Peyton Hillis is no longer breathing through a ventilator and is ‘on the road to recovery’ after last week’s swimming accident, his girlfriend has revealed.

The former NFL running back reportedly rescued his two children from drowning on a Pensacola beach in Florida on Wednesday, but was airlifted to a local hospital with lung and kidney damage as a result.

Doctors raised concerns about his kidneys earlier this week, Memphis-based WREG.com reported.

Hillis, 36, reportedly saved her two children from potentially drowning, but ended up in intensive care as a result for treatment on her lungs and kidneys.

Both children, Hillis's son Orry and her youngest daughter, are safe and neither needed to be hospitalized.

But Hillis’s partner, Angela Cole, has given a positive update on her progress.

Along with a video of the couple, he wrote on his Instagram profile: ‘A hero. So proud of this man and so incredibly grateful for the family and this amazing hospital.

‘Peyton is off the ventilator and on his way to recovery. She continues to pray for him, he still has a road ahead, but thank you for all of her prayers, love and support from him thus far.

It really makes all the difference. Today was a good day.’
