Harrowing details emerge over husband found dead with his wife at Florida retirement home

An elderly husband was found dead with his wife in their Florida retirement home on New Year’s Eve with a cleaver protruding from his stomach as she lay in a pool of blood, police have revealed.

Disturbing new details about the savage murders of Darryl Getman, 83, and Sharon Getman, 80, were released in a 12-page probable cause affidavit filed Monday. The couple was stabbed to death at their 301 Lake Margaret Circle apartment in Mount Dora on December 31.

Vickie Williams, 50, has been charged with two counts of first degree murder and grand theft of a motor vehicle for allegedly murdering the couple and stealing their car.

The court document shows that when police arrived at the Getmans’ residence in the Waterman Village senior community around 4 p.m. on New Year’s Eve, they discovered the wife lying in a T-shirt and underwear on entering a pool of blood. There were white towels next to her, suggesting that someone may have tried to help her or clean up the mess.

The couple’s green 2019 Kia Soul was not on the property and surveillance video taken from the area showed the car speeding away in the early hours.

Police said last week that a concerned neighbor had seen the Getmans’ garage door open and called security, adding that when they responded they found the couple dead.

“(Sharon) had head trauma and a large amount of blood from her abdomen, which spilled out and pooled behind her in the doorway,” police wrote.

Her husband of over 50 years was found nearby. She had “severe head and facial trauma, as well as a large cleaver-style knife with a yellow handle taped to the hilt in her abdomen,” according to the affidavit.

Police said Darryl appeared to have sustained defensive injuries, indicating that he tried to defend himself from the attacker.

Investigators are awaiting a coroner’s report to determine the exact causes of death for the couple.

Detectives also discovered a blood-stained wet towel in the guest bathroom, suggesting an attempt at cleaning, as well as curly black hair that may have belonged to the suspect and a bloody shoe.

The Getmans’ children said the elderly couple had lived in Mount Dora for more than 20 years and “really loved the area.” Police said the senseless killing appeared to be a “random” crime.

There were bare foot prints throughout the apartment and in his garage.

The couple’s green 2019 Kia Soul was not on the property and surveillance video taken from the area showed the car speeding away in the early hours.

Sharon Getman’s bag and phone were also missing. Later, her son told officers that her mother had left her belongings inside the vehicle with the keys in it.

Police sent out bulletins asking other law enforcement agencies to search for the stolen Kia, and used data from license plate readers and pings from Sharon’s phone to ultimately hunt down Williams in Savannah, Georgia.

The woman was discovered sitting in the slain couple’s car in an Amtrak parking lot and taken into custody without incident the night of January 2.

Sharon’s cell phone and purse were found inside the car. The exterior of the vehicle was smeared with what appeared to be blood, according to the affidavit.

Police took samples of Williams’ hair and DNA, as well as fingerprints and ink prints from his feet to compare with evidence from the crime scene.

During an interview with police, Williams revealed that he was homeless and lived out of his car.

She claimed the Kia she was found in was given to her by a friend named Fuller Blue to stay for a few days.

He also said he stayed in Savannah in the days before and after Dec. 31 and hasn’t visited Florida in two years.

When shown screenshots from surveillance video showing a black woman wandering Waterman Village at the time of the Getman murders, Williams repeatedly denied that it was her.

However, Williams’ parents who live in Ohio identified the person in those photos as their daughter, according to the court filing.

In addition, a latent palm print taken from a dryer at the Getman home was matched to Williams’ prints.

No motive has been revealed so far, but Mount Dora police previously described the killings as random.

Williams appeared remotely in court on Saturday and was ordered held without bail. His arraignment is scheduled for January 30.

The Getmans’ children, Anthony and Brittany, said in a statement released by the police department last week: “We are stunned, devastated and heartbroken by the horrific murder of our parents.”

‘Mum and Dad had been residents of Mount Dora for over 20 years and really loved the area.

“They were enjoying their golden years by staying active and spending time with their many friends.”

The brothers added that they “have full confidence” in the police and “hope for a successful resolution.”
