He always wanted to make history, but maybe not this way.

Elon Musk has broken the world record for racking up the largest personal fortune losses in history, wiping out £135 billion ($165 billion) of his wealth between November 2021 and December 2022, according to Guinness World Records.

It comes after the value of shares in Musk’s electric car company, Tesla, plunged by about 65 percent after he bought Twitter last year, a move that spooked investors.

The losses top Japanese tech investor Masayoshi Son’s previous record of £47bn in 2000.

In December, Bernard Arnault overtook Musk, now worth around £152bn, as the world’s richest person.

The figures were based on those available from the publisher Forbes.

Guinness said Musk’s actual losses could be higher than the figure given.

His £36bn acquisition of Twitter raised concerns among investors: Musk was not paying enough attention to Tesla.

Tesla’s stock value fell about 65 percent in 2022.

Musk tweeted after the stock markets closed in December: “Long-term fundamentals [at Tesla] they are extremely strong. Short-term market madness is unpredictable.

Musk is now worth around £152 billion, according to Forbes. Arnault is worth an estimated £155 billion.
