An etiquette expert has discussed the bacteria-spreading risks of ‘double dipping’, and how you can avoid doing it while eating snacks like large nachos.
Lucy Challenger, 39, based in London and Berkshire, is the founder and CEO of Mayfair luxury agency Polo and Tweed, which is seeking employees for super-rich clients.
She is also TikTok and instagram creator, and has earned more than 12.6 million likes for her videos that teach Generation Z social media users the essential manners and etiquette they need to fit in with the upper echelons of society.
Lucy has made a variety of videos explaining the proper way to eat various foods, some more tongue-in-cheek than others, covering a variety of delicacies from pizza to chocolate bars.
According to etiquette expert Lucy Challenger (pictured), double-dipping is a serious faux pas, but she offers practical advice on how to avoid it.
In a recent video, he addressed foods eaten with sauces, say nachos or French fries, and explained why it’s rude to “double dip”—in other words, to dip food into a sauce before biting into it and then dip it back in same piece
According to Lucy, aside from being disgusting, there’s a strong health reason why you shouldn’t double-dip communal food.
She explained: ‘Scientists at Clemson University in South Carolina have found that double dipping, also known as dipping the same chip or food in the dip, is a fantastic way to spread bacteria.
“When you take a bite of food, the bacteria in your mouth are transferred to the food.
Lucy pointed out that double bathing presents a health hazard as it is an effective way of spreading bacteria from the mouth to the common bathroom.
“If you then put the same food item back into that bowl, you’ll find that bacteria from your mouth gets into that bowl.”
He went on to explain how you can avoid double dipping when enjoying spicy snacks at shows.
Lucy said, ‘If you have a big piece of nachos and it’s polite to do so, you can cut the nacho in half. This way, you can now dip each piece independently, without fear of a double dip.
“I take the nacho, place it in the beautiful guacamole, and then, in one bite, place it in my mouth to eat.
‘If the item you’re dipping is too big to eat and in your mouth, remember this is when you shouldn’t double dip it.

‘I take the nacho, scoop up some guacamole, now I eat a small portion of the chip. This remaining portion is not to be dipped back into that bowl, I eat it as it comes.
