EMILY PRESCOTT: Susanna Reid and ex-Tory MP locked in row over VIP sex ring slip-up
EMILY PRESCOTT: Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid and former Tory MP locked in a row over VIP sex ring slip-up
Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid is locked in an extraordinary dispute with former Tory MP Harvey Proctor, and it may take a linguistics expert to sort it out.
The couple are at odds over a comment Susanna made on ITV’s breakfast show about new Labor mate Tom Watson.
He infamously supported what turned out to be completely false claims by a fantasist about an alleged pedophile ring in Westminster, of which Mr Proctor was wrongly accused of being a part.
Susanna, 52, was interviewing Labor leader Sir Keir Starmer on the show about Watson’s recent controversial appointment to the Lords when she said Watson was “mistakenly embroiled in what is now known as the VIP witch hunt.” “.
Word Puzzle: Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid is locked in an extraordinary feud with former Tory MP Harvey Proctor, and it may take a linguistics expert to solve it.
MP: The couple are at odds over a comment Susanna made on the ITV Breakfast Show about new Labor mate Tom Watson.
But Proctor, 75, tells me he has complained that it is a “lie” to say that Watson was “mistakenly” dragged into the police investigation.
Watson has said it was up to police to determine the truth of the allegations and simply encouraged alleged victims to come forward with their stories, but an official report found his interventions “created more pressure” on detectives.
Proctor has already asked Watson, 55, to apologize to him for furthering the allegations, and now says he will tweet the complaint email he sent to ITV every Monday, along with a running tally of the number of days he says the show has misled viewers, until the comment is corrected.
Mr Proctor, whose home on the Duke of Rutland’s Belvoir Castle estate was raided in 2015 as part of the police investigation, dubbed Operation Midland, tells me Good Morning Britain bosses have so far “evaded” the issue. .
Allegations: He infamously supported what turned out to be completely false claims by a fantasist about an alleged pedophile ring in Westminster, of which Mr Proctor was wrongly accused of being a part.
He says: “They responded mainly by talking about the interview, not so much about Susanna misleading her viewers about Tom Watson’s involvement in Operation Midland.”
A spokesperson for the show says: ‘Good Morning Britain wrote to Mr Proctor and explained that Susanna’s reference to ‘wrongly’ was intended to highlight that there was no evidence of the allegations against Mr Proctor. He also clearly referred to the ‘witch hunt against VIPs’.’
Mr Proctor says he would like to be on the show to set the record straight, but thinks ITV would “run a mile out of that”.
In the meantime, keep an eye on his weekly tweets…
