Eagle-eyed rom-com fans have discovered a detail that unexpectedly links the classic 1990 movies Pretty Woman and Princess Diaries.
The beloved films are reminiscent of a Cinderella tale, with the central characters, played by Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway, undergoing fairytale-style transformations, with real-world hardships along the way.
But, the parallels do not stop there. American filmmaker Garry Marshall, who directed the films, cast the same actor as a waiter in Pretty Woman and Princess Diaries and even gave him the same line.
The kind staff member, played by Marvin Braverman, helps both Vivian Ward and Princess Mia in the movies when they make a social mistake.
Eagle-eyed movie fans have discovered a detail that unexpectedly links the classic 1990 movies Pretty Woman and Princess Diaries.
In the iconic dinner scene in which Vivian tosses a snail into the air, exclaiming “slippery little suckers,” the nearby waiter catches the French delicacy.
While the other guests seem far from impressed, the Braverman character offers him reassurance, telling him that “it happens all the time.”
The scene is mirrored in the first Princess Diaries movie, when Mia Thermopolis, eager to impress at her first state dinner after learning she is the princess of the fictional European country Genovia.
While going to make a toast, the awkward teenager accidentally breaks a glass with a knife in front of her grandmother’s (played by Julie Andrews) important guests.
Princess Diaries director Garry Marshall included references to Pretty Woman in the 2001 and 2002 films.
The kind staff member, played by Marvin Braverman, helps both Vivian Ward and Princess Mia in the movies when they make a social mistake.
Helping to clear up the mess, Braverman, who again plays a staff member, tells her that “it happens all the time.”
In the film’s sequel, he then plays an unsuspecting palace staff member who catches Mia’s ring, which shoots out as she greets her subjects.
True to form, he again calmly tells the princess that it happens all the time as he returns the ring to her.
Braverman isn’t the only actor to appear in more than one of Marshall’s films: The director, who died at 81 in 2016, is known for repeatedly working with the same cast members.
The actor repeatedly plays characters who are available to help the leading ladies in the films.
Left: Héctor Elizondo played a hotel manager in Pretty Woman. Right: The actor played Anne Hathaway’s chauffeur in The Princess Diaries
In fact, Hector Elizondo, who plays hotel manager Barney Thompson on Pretty Woman and security guard Joe on Princess Diaries, starred in 18 of the director’s movies in all.
film buff and photographer Allen Tsai shared a video showing the time when Braverman appears in all three movies.
Allen is a YouTuber and TikToker and has gained a huge following by revealing details in movies that most viewers probably missed.
Fans were stunned by his latest remark, with some suggesting that it means the two movies take place “in the same cinematic universe.”
One commented on the iconic moment: ‘when it works, it works’ while another asked ‘where’s your best actor nomination?’
Another pointed out how good the waiter’s reflexes are, while more highlighted how the repetition of the line shows that it happens ‘all the time’.
