The Yankees add a THIRD former general manager to the front office by hiring longtime Mets executive Omar Minaya to Brian Cashman’s staff after spending $573.5 million in free agents.
The New York Yankees continued to add more cooks to general manager Brian Cashman’s kitchen Thursday by hiring former Mets executive Omar Minaya.
The move comes a day after the team announced the addition of former San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean. The Yankees previously added Chicago Cubs general manager Jim Hendry.
Minaya, 64, joins the Yankees at a very busy time. In addition to re-signing record-breaking slugger Aaron Judge to a nine-year, $360 million deal, Cashman also added San Francisco Giants pitcher Carlos Rodon to a six-year, $162 million deal.

Minaya was MLB’s first Latino general manager with the Montreal Expos from 2002-2004 before joining the Mets for seven seasons. It was in Queens that Minaya made his biggest moves, signing former Boston Red Sox ace Pedro Martínez and All-Star outfielder Carlos Beltrán.
The team would make just one postseason appearance during Minaya’s tenure, losing the 2006 NLCS to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
After being fired in 2010, Minaya joined the front office of the San Diego Padres, worked with the players’ union, and then rejoined the Mets as a special assistant in November 2020. He also worked for MLB, as an amateur scout. .
Sabean, 66, helped lead the San Francisco Giants to World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014. He was the Giants’ general manager from 1996 to 2014, then promoted to executive vice president of baseball operations from 2015 to 2018.
The arrival of Sabean and Minaya in the Bronx is curious, given the team’s 13-year pennant drought and fan calls for Cashman’s removal. Another failure to advance in the postseason could push owner Hal Steinbrenner to make some changes to the front office, and if he makes a move, Sabean and Minaya would represent two seasoned inside candidates.
