The 65-year-old TV presenter visited the Buckinghamshire home where she lived from the time she was a baby until she was six when she appeared in the new Channel 5 series No Place Like Home.

In the episode, which aired on Wednesday night, Ferne was emotional as she entered her childhood bedroom in the house, located on Chalfont St Peter.

She recalled that she “didn’t know” that her parents, actor Tony Britton and Ruth, had separated when she was a child, saying she only knew that her father “didn’t live here”.

Ferne, who has an older sister, Cherry, and a brother, Jasper, explained: “I didn’t know what was going on in the family at the time.”

She continued: ‘I just knew that it was me, my mother and my sister here and that my father didn’t live here.

It was weird. In those days, people didn’t tell you things.

Ruth did not meet her father until her late teens, only learning about her brother Jasper, Tony’s son from his second marriage to Eva Castle Britton, when she was around 15 years old.

Recalling memories of her late mother Ruth, who died in 2018, Ferne described her as “everything” when she opened up about her parents’ separation.

Breaking down, he said: ‘My mother was, as you can imagine, everything. She was mother and father to me, so I can tell you many stories about her.

The emotional clip aired on Loose Women ahead of the series airing on Wednesday, where Fern also promoted her series My Cornwall with Fern Britton.

Fern’s mother, Ruth, passed away at the age of 94 in April 2018, and the former This Morning host took to Twitter to pay tribute to her at the time.

Sharing a photo of her mother at home, she wrote: ‘My mother. Piety.
